Abstract

Belief in the existence of Ibegwu (Ancestral human spiritual belief) is ubiquitous inIgalacultural belief. It is the belief in continuous existence of human spiritto a world beyond who are the ancestors of the living person that still have connections and power (of favour and punishment) over the living persons. This paper concerns itself with one of those experiences; human spirit (Ibegwu). This experience of human spirit is common to virtually all part of Igala land. However, the interpretation of this experience differs based on cultural background amongIgala people. The focus of this paper shall be on the tension and contradictions that arise out of the impact and influence of Ibegwu on the material reality. The paper also attempts a conceptual analysis of Arabo-Islamic rationality and the idea of human spirit generally. The paper also examines the activities of this human spirit in Igala cultural belief. An attempt has been made to justify the reality of this human spirit using the personal interview method of research. The paper concludes that the human spirits really exists. It equally recommends for further research on why the human spirit should punish a person different from the one that offends them.
