Abstract

Tazkiyahal-nafs (self-development) is an essential theme in Islam. In fact, it is the cornerstone of the prophet’s mission: “I have been raised to perfect moral virtues”. Throughout Islamic history, beginning with the prophetic period through to the time of the salaf, and up to the era of the khalaf, tazkiyahal-nafs (self- development) occupies a center stage in the scheme of literary activities in Islamdome. Thus, this paper is an attemptat examining Rumi’s axiology; his thought on the origin, nature, and functions of values (akhlaq) in Islam vis-à-vis its impact on the process of self -development with particular reference to some couplets in his mathnawi.
Using the hermeneutical method, the paper delineates the impact of mathnawi in shaping characters of generations of Muslims right from the Ottoman period, up to the contemporary time. Hence, the paper recommends that greater attention needs to be paid to Rumi’s doctrine of imparting moral virtues that emanates from the prophetic teachings relative to tazkiyah al-nafs by incorporating the study of mathnawi in the Islamic studies curriculum in Nigerian institutions.
